Designing For The Brand You Haven't Met Yet

“Modular design means you can change the outfit without changing the personality.”

Most rebrands stop at a single moment in time—what the business looks like today. We like to think further down the road, into the “what ifs” you can’t quite see yet.

What if your services expand?
What if you open a second location?
What if your brand evolves into something you can’t yet imagine?

For Big Sky Design, those “what ifs” became part of the creative brief, even if they weren’t part of the plan.

“We don’t just design for today—we design for the brand you haven’t met yet.”

The Challenge: Keep It Big Sky, But Make Room for More

When Big Sky opened their Shop + Studio, they weren’t reinventing their identity—they were branching out. They needed a look that felt connected to the parent brand but had its own personality. The solution wasn’t to start from scratch, but to re-engineer what already worked.

We kept the structure and rhythm of their existing logo—the clean forms, the recognizable composition—so the audience would instantly know these brands were related. But we introduced modular elements to give this branch its own voice.

The Modular Move

The most iconic part of Big Sky’s identity is the “cloud” element. In our reimagining, that open space became a canvas for change. For the Shop + Studio, we swapped in a new colorway, shifting the mood without losing the brand’s DNA.

“Modular design means you can change the outfit without changing the personality.”

Even the anchoring bar beneath the logo was reworked—moving from the original palette to a deeper, more grounded blue. These small but deliberate changes allowed the Shop + Studio to stand on its own while still feeling part of something bigger.

The best part? The design system could do this again and again. Swap in a texture, a pattern, a new color story—and the brand could expand into new markets, services, or locations with total ease.

Designing Beyond the Horizon

The truth is, Big Sky Shop + Studio is no longer around. But the thinking behind its identity still stands as one of our favorite examples of future-ready branding.

Because you may not foresee your brand expanding—but we are. And that’s the advantage of working with a team who thinks in systems, not just symbols.

“When you think in systems, you can grow without losing yourself.”

When you design for the brand you haven’t met yet, you’re not just creating a logo. You’re creating a framework for growth, a visual language that can speak in new dialects without losing its accent.

Big Sky’s identity didn’t just fit the moment—it’s built to adapt to whatever comes next.
